An introduction to Home-Start
About Home-Start Medway
In 2014-15 Home-Start Medway supported 176 families with the help of 90 volunteers. Of the 176 families, 111 had home-visiting support and 60 received a co-ordinator visit and ongoing support. 5 families’ needs were referred to a specialist agency that best suited their needs. 7 families received money management and debt guidance. 6 families received free energy advice. We helped put food on the table for 41 people who would otherwise have gone hungry (Foodbank). 40 families received a Christmas gift box, 12 families received a Christmas food hamper and 25 families received Christmas gift parcels.
Home-Start Medway opened in 1987, 14 years after the original Home-Start began in Leicester. Across the UK, there are over 250 Home-Start schemes. Home-Start Medway is an independent charity which adopts the Constitution, Standards and Methods of Practice of Home-Start UK.
Where do we cover?
Home-Start Medway is based in Gillingham and covers the whole Medway area.
We are managed by a Board of Trustees who are from the local community and come from a variety of different backgrounds. The Board of Trustees are responsible for governance and setting the direction of the scheme.
There are eights members of staff, together with a network of trained volunteers who carry out the home-visiting parent support service, offer financial fitness support and run the Pop n Play.
We have strong Partnerships with many local organisations and companies which allow us to utilise local expertise to enhance support for families.
Home-Start Medway is affiliated to the national organisation, Home-Start UK, but we are autonomous and responsible for our own management and our own funding. Home-Start UK provides advice and support together with a stringent Quality Assurance review process to ensure the scheme operates effectively. We are proud to report that we achieved
Home-Start UK Quality Assurance Standards!
