Army Family Support

Life as a Military Wife

‘My husband joined the army when my son was 3yrs old, we hadn’t left our small town in Scotland before.  All 3 of us were excited, even the cat.  The time he had away from home on basic training was hard.  We moved 350 miles and I found it hard making new friends, thankfully my son didn’t seem to have that problem!  We were invited to BBQ’s and events that my husband was told about, so we had to socialise and that was really good for me.  Friends would come and go when posted; we would be posted, so starting from scratch again was something we had to learn, not always easy.  I now know there is extra support when I need a helping hand, dealing with my emotions and our children’s when daddy is away is not easy.  I just needed to ask and talk to people around me.’
‘Life as a military wife is  full of ups and downs, for the whole family.  Never a dull moment!  Sometimes I think no-one can help.  The children won’t settle and I’m so far away from close family.  There are always other mums feeling the same, I didn’t realise this at first.  I now know where I can get support from and that really helps when part of such unique way of family life.’
‘Having 2 young children and being married to a soldier is not as glamorous as some people may think.  It gets hard starting all over again, my husband, their father, coming and going for long periods of time.  Not to mention in sometimes dangerous places.  Each one of our family having their own ways of adjusting.  At the same time a new life in the forces gave my family a whole world to explore as well as a fantastic career for my husband, certainly an adventure’.
